MUZAFFARABAD/ RAWALPINDI, May 17: Ten people were drowned after their boat capsized in the Jhelum River in Azad Kashmir on Friday. Six others were rescued, authorities said.

The victims were crossing the river to attend a wedding ceremony in the Mirpur district when their boat overturned near Chak Qazi village at about 11.30am.

The deceased included three women and two children. Six bodies could be recovered till the filing of this report and efforts were under way to recover the four bodies.

The Jhelum police confirmed the death of eight people. Talking to Dawn from Mirpur, a police official quoted the boat driver, Nazir Hussain, as telling the police that the incident had occurred when the boat was being driven by one of the passengers.
