LAHORE: The city administration on Thursday launched a crackdown on those involved in artificial shortage and overpricing of sugar in the provincial capital.

The teams, led by the assistant commissioners, got over 1,000 tonnes of sugar supplied across the city’s retail markets, with additional supplies ongoing to maintain a balanced supply chain.

During the crackdown, 27 shopkeepers and hoarders were arrested, 13 shops were sealed and fines amounting to Rs450,000 were imposed on others. Nine cases were also registered.

“Action was taken on solid evidence, ensuring that no innocent trader is unfairly targeted. We assure full support to law-abiding traders,” Lahore DC Syed Musa Raza said.

He urged the citizens to report any issues with sugar availability or overpricing immediately, with direct access to the additional deputy commissioner general for swift resolution. “All efforts are focused on providing relief to the public, with the administration reinforcing that the law applies equally to all.”

The officer claimed that these measures had stabilised sugar prices and availability, directly benefiting Lahorites by ensuring a steady and affordable supply of this essential sugar.

SAND EXCAVATION: A team of Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) on Thursday got five people booked for unlawfully excavating sand. The team led by Ruda’s enforcement director also seized several sand-laden tractor-trolleys, excavators and other equipment, according to a spokesman.
