PESHAWAR: Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem visited the Governor’s House here on Wednesday to celebrate Independence Day.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi welcomed him at the main entrance and took him to his office in a traditional buggy.

A police guard saluted the Olympic gold medalist, while rose petals were showered along the route.

A traditional Khattak dance was performed. Nadeem was accompanied by his coach, Salman Butt.

A formal ceremony was later held at the Governor’s House to celebrate the victory of the javelin thrower at the recent Paris Olympics.

Urges young athletes to work hard for success

The participants included parliamentarians, provincial chief secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, inspector general of police Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, businesspersons, athletes, students, and people from other walks of life.

The governor presented Nadeem with a traditional turban and a gift. They also cut a cake together in celebration of Independence Day.

Mr Kundi praised Nadeem for his outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics, saying the athlete’s historic victory added joy to the Independence Day celebrations.

He declared Nadeem a national hero, who, he said, elevated the country’s pride and served as an inspiration for the youth.

The governor highlighted the province’s struggles with terrorism in the recent years and the sacrifices made by the security personnel and people, including the Army Public School’s students and staff members martyred in a terrorist attack.

He expressed a commitment to developing sports facilities in the province and supporting young athletes to perform internationally.

Mr Kundi urged the provincial government to help young athletes represent the province and country in world events.

The Olympic gold medalist thanked the governor for the warm reception and hospitality.

He said that his achieved victory at the Paris Olympics due to hard work, his parents’ support, and the prayers of the entire nation.

Later, the javelin champion, along with the governor, met with athletes and informed them about the story of his success and the crucial role of his coach in it.

He emphasised the importance of dedication and professional training.

Nadeem asked young athletes to work hard and with dedication to be successful.
