A FEW QUESTIONS: While the people have come out on the streets to support the Palestinians, why is it that the government has so far taken a muted position on the issue? Don’t we — the nation, the gover­­n­ment and the state — stand with Palestine? Why do we have to worry about what other governments might think of our clear stance? Why don’t we let the world know in unambiguous terms that we stand by our Muslim brethren regardless of the country they live in?

CONCRETE MEASURES: The main cause of the present economic crunch is a misalignment of energy/power usage and economic priorities. We need some immediate remedial measures. To begin with, the closure of shops and markets around 8pm should strictly be enforced. All private vehicles should be off-road at least one day every week. All private cars having less than four occupants should not be allowed in the fast lane during peak hours in order to encourage ‘high occupancy’ commute patterns.

Let us have a trial run in Islamabad.

NUMBER PLATES: The provincial government has asked people to collect new vehicle registration plates to replace the old ones after paying Rs1,800. This is an unnecessary burden on the people who are already facing considerable difficulties because of inflation that has sent prices of everything upwards. Why are people being forced to unnecessarily change their vehicles’ number plates?

HIGHER EDUCATION BUDGET: The University of Karachi is a public-sector university which is the first choice of students belonging to middle class families that cannot afford to pay high tuition fee. The government should increase the budget of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) so that more and more students may be offered scholarships and financial assistance.
