‘PCB advised to keep Afridi, Akmal and Shehzad away’

LAHORE: Some members of the previous national team management have advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to keep Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad away from the national team for betterment of Pakistan cricket in future, which is at its lowest ebb mainly because of lackluster approach of these three players.
Dawn has learnt through reliable sources that the presence of these players will not help the PCB raise a strong team.
The PCB, the sources said, has taken the proposal seriously and it will also exchange these views with the new chief selector.
Though Afridi has decided to step down from captaincy, he has not called it a day and wanted to play as a player.
The sources further said Afridi’s sponsors have advised him not to resign from T20 cricket as they have invested heavily on him, though his popularity has declined after Pakistan’s disappointing defeats at Asia Cup and World T20.
Apart from the previous team management advice, the PCB is also considering the reports presented by manager Intikhab Alam and Waqar Younis, who have also criticised the trio.
Both Umar and Shehzad had been dropped from the national side a number of times on different grounds but Afridi had always supported them to return to the squad. In the present scenario, keeping the trio away, especially Afridi, will be a testing case for the PCB.

Cricket is changing rapidly. Bangladesh's bowlers were top of the wicket takers in the world t20, that left armer Mushfiqur would make any team. No mention of how inept the bowling attack was, I cant remember a single yorker being bowled, or an offcutter. One dimensional bowling attack, the only good bowler was Sami. How Pakistan could have done with Mohammad Asif in this tournament, Englands David Willey was also brilliant, in the final which England should have won and the tournament. Amir was clueless.

It will be fine if you could keep away Najam Sethi, Waquar and Sharyar, regarding Afridi he should retire completely from Cricke.

@Sarmad: I agree with the Malik part - he is quite useless whenever it matters, just like Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shahzad. However, Hafeez has been performing okay in last year or so. Okay he is not a match winner, but at least an honest and upright man who does not play politics. If Sarfraz is to succeed, he needs at least a couple of seniors by his side, Hafeez could be one. The other could be someone from bowling side. But I agree time to permanently do away with Malik and Afridi; and send Akmal and Shahzad on a long leave.

very good decision. Please also keep away those players who does not want to play test... Those who could prove their mettle in test that they can defend the ball and than hit the balls of spinners as well as of fasts should make their way in t20... Rely on 'Tulla' players has brough Pakistan's t20 to this stage, beside other reasons(not playing IPL and having no home cricket is other..).

There may be differences among players given the different personality everybody have but being a professional you cannot afford to bring such things in play. Its as simple as that perform or perish. More than anybody else i think it is a selector job to be brave and have vision. Vurat Kohli was not a star from the first day. They spotted the talent gave him ample time to nurture it. Pakistan selectors need to be brave and brutally honest. Another aspect i think Pak players should work on is handling the media, media will all sorts of questions its not a big deal to show positive vibes and be diplomatic as our primary job is to play.

It is the very popularity and flare that he brings to cricket that PCB cant afford to drop Afridi. Morever, among the existing lot he is the best T20 player. Only he has the muscle power and body stature to match the ,muscle and limbs of some top class English, Kiwi and West Indian T20 batsmen, who are able to throw ball out of the park. Pak won only one match in and that was due to Afridi. After relinquishing the pressure of captaincy, Afridi would surely get more confident in his batting.

@Fez ..Very much true. Pak bowling has been the success factor for long time. Now it's gradually decreasing. In first T20 WC shohail tanveer & other did well Pak became runners-up. 2nd T20 WC Amer, Gul ( really gudojer that tournament ), Afridi & Rzzak did well Pak champion..... But recent bowler have no quality pace and variation. Bowled short and wide horrible. Question is what did waqar did for such for a long time as coach .

T20 and ODI cricket is now changed. Unfortunately we are still in 90's . Different bats, shots and built of players. Players now play with No fear. Senior players must make a way for a new generation. It will help coaches to proceed with new chapters in the coaching manual i.e. strength training,new shots and fearless mind etc

Three or four players getting together and underperforming just because they don't get on with the coach or team management or one of them is not getting the right place to bat. Start fresh with: Babar, Haris, Sarfraz, Fawad, Imad, Amir, Junaid, Yasir, Sohail K., Sharjeel/Mukhtar and a couple of players from U19.
Drop everyone else for good and don't ever bring them back. All we have seen are losses in ODIs and T20 in the last many years.
Even if this team loses half its matches now, they will play without politics and with passion. And will get to the top one day.

It's a very good decision. Umar Akmal, Shehzad plus Shoaib Malik should be removed from Pakistani cricket. These guys are corrupt group makers, their efficiency on the cricket ground is zero. Afridi is a big burden on cricket team. He never understood the tactics of playing cricket. He plays without any concept and strategy in mind. It was a biggest mistake by PCB to appoint Afridi as captian coz he never used his brain on the cricket field. These guys did the most damage to Pakistani cricket. Finally, It's now time to say good bye to them.

Its sad state of affairs with PCB. No Pak player made it to the ICC XI T20 Team which is a matter of concern because Bangladesh player Mustafizur made it as the 12th man. SL players also did not make the cut. But that was expected but not with Pak players. There has to a rational change in the domestic circuit and pick players on merit and keep politics away.
I am an Indian and would love to see players like Miandad, Imran, Saeed Anwar, Akram, Inzy, Saqlain, Azhar Mahmood etc.. We miss the old team and those days when Pak team were a Top team.

Then let the newcomers through on merit, and stick with them and give them a decent chance to establish themselves - instead of bringing the old guard back each time a player fails.
And by new guys, i am not talking about Khurram Manzoor or Sohaib Maqsood etc, but players that have consistently been performing over a sustained period of time domestically.
The PCB's dumb policy has already ruined the career of Fawad Alam. Let's not do that to other deserving players in the future.

Look how many batsmen and bowlers they have tried over the years all have failed not one international level player. Pakistan future looks dim .. I must say ye Waqar should have been teaching them to bowl straight. I tell you again Mohammad Asif used to mesmerize you when he used to come into bowl, he needs to come back, such a talent. Bowling has been poor since Saeed Ajmal left the scene, he was the leader of the attack because the fast bowling had become a joke. I cant wait to see Yasir bowling again either. Keep them away for almost 4 season (means 5 years) bring them back and see if they perform well and play for their nation then keep them in the site if they do the same penalty should be 10 years, and make same law for all the players any player in the dressing room found to be guilty of making conspiracy against other player or doing politics will be ban for 5 years from international cricket he can continue domestic cricket if he wish. At the same time PCB management needs guts to implement such laws and policies as they are more crupt then the playes....

PCB should disclose who are the Sponsors of Afridi. They are playing with Pakistan cricket's future for their own commercial gains. PCB must not take any pressure from these people.
Throw these three players out and send a string signal in the team, that no one has a permanent fixture here. Furthermore, these players should stay away from the national side atleast for 2 years and should be considered only on the basis of a string domestic performance.
No one should be greater than the great game of cricket.

They failed in this tournament, but Shezad and Akmal stil have to play.
Just set conditions.
Dot ball % not to exceed 25%
Keep rotating strike, play with soft hands and find gaps. They need to practice hit and run cricket like I did in school PE lessons. If the ball touches the bat then you have to run. This will improve shot selection and running.
The biggest failure of all the pak batsmen was lack of placement. All the good shots went straight to fielders.

It will be unfair on Sarfaraz to not get a choice in this matter of team selection. In the last 3 years it is proven time and again, best talent in country include Akmal, Shezad and Afridi. Robing the new captain the services of best talent is not right. Atleast give Sarfaraz a chance to Chanel this talent to performance. After all what is captain ship and leadership skill if man management is not included, every team will have talented people who are difficult to manage, best leaders are those who can make these people work for leader and teams interest.

The Umar Akmal and Shehzad tried his best to under perform to oust Afridi, now the new Coach, Captain and Selector (but the same Top management) has to decide about these 02 players. One other potential trouble maker is and will Shoaib Malik, who needs to sideline as well forever along with these 02.

I don’t know why some people are pouring scorn on ShoaibMalik. He along with Mohammad Amir and Sarfaraz Ahmad are the only three that can make to any international side at any point of time and rest couldn’t even make to a first class team.
Infact Mohammad Hafeez, without his bowling is absolute burden, YounisKhan or even AsadShafeeq with better technique is lot better than him. Pakistan should not consider him especially without his bowling for any major ICC. In 2015 50 over world cup, he came up with some injury and here again he repeated it.

Current PCB's higher management is incapable. They have succeeded in putting all the blame on players and selectors, thus saving their jobs. Modern cricket requires a lot of planning on the table, which is not the way of doing business in PCB.
Secondly, I find the proposal of keeping certain players out of the team pre-emptively, of extreme nature. The fair opportunity to all good performers should be the way of thinking. But that makes selectors' job much more tough. They must travel around and see who is performing in which conditions. That's how fair selection is done.
It is PCB management's job to find good selectors , who can analyze a player correctly.

I donot think (PCB) shall be thinking about the sponsor of Afride, they shall think about Pakistan. They shall only bring the players on their performances.
Keep couple of test players as selector who have preformed well in the past. They will help to select the team then performance will be better of Pakistani players.

Hope these advisers are not Sikindar Bakhat, Javid Miandad and Co. Unfortunately in Pak cricket Lahore vs. Karachi control is still put ahead of national interests. These two individuals constantly bash against Punjab players on live TV and suggest players from Karachi that have been given number of chances such as Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam, Sami, etc.

Along with many others who should be ousted from the Pakistan team, we also invariably include Shoib Malik's name. If you compare his performance since his reincarnation in the Pakistan team sincerely with others in the limited edition of the game and have him out based on that, then you cannot field a 11 member team. Besides, no Mizbah, no Yousuf or Afridi around in the limited over cricket - he can be a experienced head that young captains like Sarfaraz or Azhar can share.

It would be the wisest and paramount decision, but then again It’s not the trio but the quartet. Why just the triple A (Afridi, Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad), why not Shoaib Malik as well. He has proved to be the worst player for Pakistan. From 2007 up till now he has not played a single inning that has added any value to the team. Its time to revisit the entire squad and give chance to new players. Shehzad seat can be easily taken by Haris Sohail who has already proved his worth, with Sharjeel opening with him. Similarly Shohaib Maqsood can play much better thn Umar Akmal as one down, Azhar Ali can substitute Shoaib Malik and can play much better thn him. Another ignorant step by the Pakistan Board--PCB. Open a ledger for all active players in Pakistan. And let the player selection be an automated affair based on their recent performances. The ledger can run only 6 months deep. Older performances fall of the other end with the passage of time. This will guarantee player picks on performance. No personal or foreign vendetta's ... just pure meritocracy is the way forward.

Isolating the dressing room from political elements or the PCB management in this case is key to building discipline and trust amongst players. Keeping out Afridi, Akmal, and Shehzad is necessary as they would certailny jeporadize the dressing room culture by voiding on their captain's say. Sarafraz at end of the day is junior to this trio and would not be able to govern the team comprehensively. Lastly PCB politics that promote players on an ANTI-MERIT basis (Khurrum Manzoor as such) needs to end or this will keep decaying the Pakistans Cricket further.

What test case? His time is over and he should be dropped. Heavens will not fall. In my opinion Hafeez and Shoaib may also be immediately dropped. Politics in cricket must be eliminated and for this to happen the octogenarian Sheryar Khan must also go. As his policy to appease everyone has ruined the game. Azhar Ali must also be axed as captain and should be replaced with the dynamic and bold Sarfraz Ahmed.

The way Afridi plays is his natural way of playing, he can hit a big score and at another time he can be out in the first ball. This is reg. his batting.
Now come to his bowling and fielding, he is a good bowler and fielder. This is his natural way of playing so now it is upto the PCB to select him or omit him. hk

Pakistan needs fearless players like Kohli, Ab de villers, Gayle, Mc Cullum. No need of these players who still play defensive cricket of 1990s. We need players who can change the course of the game by hitting hard across the boundary and not players who give catching practice to the opposite team after wasting precious overs by playing dot balls or singles. Though Afridi was one player but now age is catching up with him and he is taking his seniority level in the team for granted...

I reckon that if the current PCB board (Shahryar and Sethi) remain, Afridi is very much likely to be named in the playing 11 as well. With the number of endorsements he brings in is more than incentive enough for the board to retain him in the team. Espeacially if Sethi and Shahryar are getting kickbacks from these endorsements on dome form or another.

It's a leader who set the example but if show favours to some
players who you are close to that is detrimental to rest of the team spirits. As our team had grouping to began with the players mentioned in this article all go back to basic and have counciling session beside boots on the ground to improve thier skills how to be humble and handle all team members with dignity and respect do not look down and always help the Jr. team players.
This coming from a person who saw first hand with many many tours with Pak team all over except India. But to defend Umer Akmal is for sure mistreated by our coach every where with profanity and less than respect most of the tours.

The PM should restructure the PCB. While the match fee should be deducted if a match goes away due to inept performance. The players be barred from advertisement mafia. When wealth comes without doing anything shy should one work hard. Only performance - based players be given bonus. The contract base payments be stopped. Only match fee with penalties condition.

in t20 world cup the only match pakistan won against bangladesh was due to afridi who was man of the match--people are emotionally unstable to think clearly--they forget last asia cup when afridi was man of the match against india when he scored 2 sixes against indian spinner in last over to win the match and also against bangladesh he was the one who won pakistan that match--as captain he is unsuccesful mainly because of our batting line failure.afridi is the only t20 pakistani player who won them more matches single handedly than any other pakistani player

Are we reading too much through one T20 championship? I believe the performance of these players should be measured based on all three formats over a reasonable past and then decide their suitability for each format. The statement in this article is too generic suggesting these three should be not part of any format. I think Umar Akmal is by far the most talented batsman in our current line up. He should be groomed mentally to get the most out of him. Afridi should also be tested in his capacity as a player only.

Ahmed Shehzad plays for himself, not the tean and not to win. Umer Akmal want to get everything without giving anything. Afridi is inept, egotistical, way way past his playing days, and has no qualities of a captain. I would add the chairman of the PCB for choosing his word over the betterment of the team.
