QUETTA, May 29: Two policemen were killed and three other people injured on the Spinny Road on Sunday in what officials said was a sectarian attack.

A spokesman for the proscribed Lashkar-i-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sources said that constables Mohammad Ishaq and Musa were returning to the Brewery Road police station after performing duty at a church. When their motorbike was in the Spinny Road area gunmen opened fire on them.

Both policemen were killed and three other people, including a sub-inspector of the Central Investigation Department, were injured.

The injured and the bodies were taken to the Bolan Medical Collage Hospital. The injured were identified as SI Raza Mohammad and Yazdan Ali. A woman who also was injured was not identified.

“It seems to be a case of sectarian killing,” a senior police officer said, adding that some suspects were detained.

Meanwhile, a man identifying himself as Ali Sher Haidari called reporters and said he was a spokesman for the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi. He claimed that his organisation had carried out the attack.—Saleem Shahid AP adds: A police official, Ami Mohammad, said the policemen killed in the attack belonged to the Shia community.
