Ateeq, Rahim and Waheed shine

KARACHI, Feb 25: Owner M. Ateeq shared the racing limelight with riding boy Abdul Rahim and trainer A. Waheed Siddiqui, when each registered a splendid double at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held Monday.

The trio made their presence felt in the opening event, when the 14-year-old bay gelding Law Of Nature scored their first win of the afternoon, holding off the brave challenge of Baby Tabassum and Whitney Houston.

Then in the fourth event, Abdul Rahim rode a marvellous race on the grey mare Blue’s Night, preventing the chestnut mare My Time from completing a hat trick after both were engaged in a neck and neck tussle till the two furlong marker, before Blue’s Night pulled away to win the race by 6 1/2 lengths.

The winner was trained by Rahim’s older brother A. Waheed Siddiqui and belonged to the Ateeq stables.

The much talked about Noor-un-Nisa, ridden by veteran rider M. Mazhar, registered her maiden success in the second race beating the speedy Atish Fishan by a neck in a thrilling photo-finish. Stable companion Winning Streak, edged out Shining Rock for the third spot.

In the following event, Walking Distance partnered once again by jockey Ahmed, never let his large band of supporters down, ending the pretensions Gold Money, Shahdad Star and Zabyan.

In another interesting event Deniro after finishing second best in his last two outings finally hit the victory trail after holding off a stiff challenge from Sachin till heads turned for home with riding boy Naveed in the saddle.

Urging his charge on, Deniro settling down in the straight, pulled away magnificently and went on to win the race by 7 1/2 lengths from Sachin, with Lucky One chasing the first two runners throughout the race.

The concluding event was picked up by M. Zafar’s chestnut outsider Ray Of Light, beating more fancied runners Baby Face, Queen Of Hearts, and Tomahawk to present jockey M. Yousuf also figure among the day’s winners.

The next race meeting is scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 3.
