Mosque upkeep

Published April 15, 2025

THE deteriorating condition of the mosque at Data Darbar in Lahore is alarming. The mosque happens to be adjacent to one of the most revered Sufi shrines in the region. During the last 10 days of Ramazan, I intended to observe aitekaf at the sacred site for which I visited the mosque several times to observe the conditions there.

My whole experience was overshadowed by the poor state of security, hygiene and discipline prevailing at the premises.

Furthermore, the general maintenance of carpets, prayer mats, and fans was substandard, making it difficult for the worshippers to perform their religious duties in a comfortable and clean environment.

This is deeply concerning, especially considering the millions of rupees that are collected in donations from devoted disciples. Despite the immense respect and financial contributions this shrine receives, it remains poorly maintained, raising serious questions about mana-gement and accountability.

The federal as well as provincial governments should take immediate and effective action to improve the mosque’s security, hygiene and overall upkeep.

It is imperative that this sacred place reflects the honour and dignity it deserves, ensuring that all visitors and worshippers practise their faith in a well-maintained, secure and facilitated environment.
