11 mills ready to start cane crushing

MIRPURKHAS, Nov 23 Eleven sugar mills have made preparations to start cane crushing following issuance of notices by the Sindh government, but they are complaining about not getting supply of the commodity.

Cane Commissioner Tariq Ahmed Memon issued notices to 24 sugar mills of the 32, which had failed to comply with the directives of the Sindh government.

Eight sugar mills Mirpurkhas, Al Abbas, Al-Noor, Habib, Matiari, Mehran, Sakrand and Tharparkar have already started crushing.

The 24 mills included Ranipur, Pangrio, New Dadu, Naudero, Najma, Mirza, Laar, Kiran, G.D.W situated at Ghotki, Faran, Sanghar, Khairpur, Abdullah Shah Ghazi, Ansari, Digri, Dewan, Dewan Khoski, Bawani, Sardar Ghulam Mohammad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Shah Murad, Seeri, Army Welfare and Sindh Abadgar sugar mills.

He warned that if any mill did not start crushing, legal action would be taken against it.

On Monday, three more sugar mills Faran, Sanghar and Khairpur launched crushing while 21 sugar mills yet to start crushing.

The administrator of Tharparkar Sugar Mills, Choudhry Ashraf Arain, said that his mill and others were facing no-cane situation because farmers were not harvesting their crop, although mills were offering Rs150 per 40kg rate to them.

It is believed that the growers are waiting for an increase in the price of sugarcane.
