KARACHI: Prime Minister Mr Liaquat Ali Khan at a public meeting in Karachi on Monday [Aug 14] said that refugee rehabilitation will be given top priority after the defence of the State by the Government of Pakistan. The Prime Minister was reviewing the work done by the Government during the period of one year — from August to August [—] on Independence Day at Jehangir Park. spoke ... for over 100 minutes. It was broadcast ... by Radio Pakistan. Mr Liaquat Ali Khan assured the nation that the Government … will not rest until all the refugees had been settled. Stating that there was hardly one country … which had received such a large number of refugees, he said: “All possible effort will be made … to rehabilitate … [them].”
Regretting that the refugees were playing into the hands of a few individuals, who are out to disrupt the machinery of the Government, he gave a serious warning to the Communists in Pakistan... . The Prime Minister said: “Our Communist friends pose as champions of civil liberties and accuse Government of suppressing individual freedom. May I ask them what variety of civil liberty they want. If they want the Russian variety, I am quite prepared to give it to them.”
