Dangerous fun

Published August 7, 2025

A FEW days ago, while I was travelling by car across the old Kalabagh bridge, I had an experience that left me both disturbed and deeply concerned. As I drove slowly, I noticed a group of young boys standing on the edge of footpath, making videos, laughing and trying to capture the river view from dangerous angles. Just one wrong step, a slip or a sudden vehicle passing close to them could have ended in tragedy, ruining their joys.

The bridge, though once repaired, is still extremely unsafe, especially for pedestrians. It has no proper protective railings or barriers, further making it prone to accidents. It is disheartening to witness such negligence towards a structure that serves as the lifeline for Kalabagh and its surrounding areas. A bridge is meant to connect and protect, not to put lives at risk.

The episode made me realise how close to disaster we happen to be. Whether it is a bunch of boys unknowingly risking their lives for a moment of fun, or innocent children crossing th ebridge for education, they all walk a thin line between routine and ruin only because the bridge lacks basic safety features.

The relevant authorities and the district administration should act immediately. They should prioritise safety and install side railings to prevent accidental falls. Besides, there is also a need for warning signs, and streetlights for improved visibility in the area.

There should also be regular structural safety inspections and maintenance. Let us not wait for headlines of tragedy. Kala-bagh bridge needs immediate attention.
