LAHORE: Fine arts students at the Government College University (GCU) have used their creative voices to spotlight urgent social and environmental concerns through their annual Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) thesis exhibition.

The three-day event, titled Project Display, was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry at the Ustad Allah Bukhsh Art Gallery, Alhamra.

The exhibition showcases the thesis work of 55 graduates — 16 painters and 39 graphic designers — who explored a range of pressing issues through visual narratives, UI/UX redesigns, mixed-media installations and digital documentaries. The works themes such as water pollution (Ahsan Iqbal), the disappearance of indigenous crafts (Waqas Haider), the impact of cultural norms on women (M Ihtesham), and the recognition of unsung heroes (Huma Irfan Sherwani).

Several projects also delve into mental health, memory, and identity — including In My Head by Habiba Waheed and Behind the Smile by M Umer Farooq — while painting students explored deeply personal and emotional subjects such as Absence of Father (Ayesha), Stages of Grief (Rabbia), and Withering Life (Sibrah Shahid).

In his remarks, the VC praised the students for their thought-provoking and socially relevant work. He noted that the exhibition reflected a fusion of artistic discipline and critical inquiry. “These young artists and designers are emerging as socially conscious voices ready to engage with the professional world,” he said.

He added that the purpose of the exhibition was not only to showcase the academic and creative journey of the students but also to served as their introduction to the professional art and design community.

“The exhibit is the culmination of months of research, experimentation and critical thinking, offering the public a glimpse into the diverse voices shaping Pakistan’s next generation of creative professionals,” he emphasized.

Also in attendance were Prof Dr Babar Aziz, dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Amna Anwar Khan, in-charge of the Department of Fine Arts. The jury evaluating the projects for creativity, execution and relevance included Prof Dr Bilal Ahmed from the Punjab University, Naumana Masood from the Government College Gulberg, and Ayesha Siddiqa from Lahore College for Women University.
