THE recent decision to block a number of YouTube channels needs to be revisited. In fact, the ban on at least two such channels has already been overturned. The same should be the case with the rest as well. These platforms have played an important role in providing to the people a range of perspectives on social and political affairs.

Freedom of expression and the right to information are essential pillars of any democratic society. Instead of going ahead with an autocratic approach, the relevant authorities must consider a balanced approach that allows space for diverse opinions while addressing any legitimate concerns through fair regulation.

State and its institutions should continue to uphold all the fundamental rights that are enshrined in the Constitution so that Pakistan’s democracy remains strong, inclusive and responsive to its citizens.
