DEADLY NUCLEAR OPTIONS: Advancements in nuclear technology and missile systems are not only raising the potential of conflict between Pakistan and India, but also impacting regional stability. The competition for nuclear superiority is raising tensions, and may spark more vertical proliferations. Similarly, the tendency to achieve security objectives through nuclear capabilities may also sensitise non-nuclear states to think about acquiring nuclear capabilities. The growing competition increases the risk of escalation that is not only dangerous for the two countries, but also for the region and global security.

CLONED PHONE: Late lst year, I purchased a cellphone approved by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). A few days after the purchase, I found that the IMEI number was not genuine. I immediately returned to the shop, asking for a refund or a genuine phone in replacement. The shopkeeper refused both my requests. I complained to the PTA with all the details, but there was no help on offer. Instead, the PTA asked me to stop using the phone. After a few months, my mobile data was blocked, rendering my phone useless. As a matter of fact, I did not purchase a cloned phone intentionally. Why should I suffer this loss? Why does the PTA ask us to report when it does not help?

LAWLESS LAND: Some districts in Sindh, like Kashmore and Kandhkot, have become battlegrounds where journalists and writers risk their lives for exposing unchecked violence, kidnappings and other crimes. Reports of brazen attacks on media persons have become all too common. The grip of feudal lords, politically-backed crime networks, and an indifferent administration have played havoc with social life. Those who dare to write about the deteriorating security situation are often suppressed. How many more voices must be silenced before authorities take a decisive action?
