KARACHI: As many as 180 more shopkeepers were fined for profiteering on Saturday during the ongoing campaign launched by the city administration to effectively enforce price control during Ramazan.

Officials said that the city administration had taken action against over 1,166 profiteers during the past seven days of the holy month, imposing fines totaling over Rs18.44 million.

They added that 110 shopkeepers had been arrested so far for selling essential commodities at exorbitant prices, while 74 shops were sealed during the anti-profiteering campaign, which was launched on the first day of Ramazan.

On the seventh day of Ramazan, a fine of Rs613,000 was imposed on profiteers in district South, Rs166,000 in East, Rs13,000 in West, Rs164,000 in Central, Rs53,000 in Malir, Rs196,000 in Korangi and Rs45,000 in Keamari, the officials said.

They noted that the anti-profiteering campaign was in full swing across the city and added that, to make it more effective, a strategy had been devised to auction items seized from profiteers and ensure their sale at the notified price in the presence of shopkeepers.
