BIRMINGHAM (Alabama): President Nixon said here yesterday [May 25] there appeared to be an era of peace in sight as a result of the winding down of the Viet-Nam war, the improvement in US relations with the Soviet Union and China, and developments in the Middle East. ...Mr Nixon suggested that the United States would improve its relations more slowly with China than it would with the Soviet Union. He stressed his administration’s efforts “to improve relations with Peking and help it to become a member of the world community”. …He declared he would think of no greater threat to world peace than to have a country of 800 million people with a dangerous nuclear capability, isolated from the rest of the world. The US President ... stress[ed] that the Soviet Union and the United States had decided to push for an agreement on limiting ... nuclear weapons. …

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in the UN,] Ambassador ... Agha Shahi, has informed the UN Secretary-General U Thant that his Go­­vernment would be willing to receive a UN representative to co-ordinate and work out the moralities of ext­ending relief to East Pakistan “on the understan­ding that his role and activities would be within the framework of humanitarian assistance.” …
