KARACHI: Nomination papers of 1,849 candidates for the upcoming local government elections in the city on the seats of chairman and vice chairman were accepted while 140 others were rejected in week-long scrutiny, it emerged on Wednesday.

Similarly, 183 nominations for the 38 seats of district councillors were accepted while nine were rejected by respective returning officers.

A report compiled after the scrutiny of the documents that ended on Tuesday indicated that 5,511 of the nominations filed for the 964 general council seats were accepted while 497 others were rejected.

According to district-wise details, in Karachi East district, 288 nominations were accepted and 87 others rejected for the 31 seats of chairman and vice chairman. For 124 general seats of councillors, 906 nominations were accepted and 137 were rejected.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the third phase of the local government elections, appeals against the acceptance and rejection of the nomination papers could be filed by Oct 30 and the same would be decided by Nov 5.

In Karachi Central district, there are a total of 51 chairman and vice chairman seats for which nominations were filed, while 968 nominations were accepted and 104 others were rejected for the 148 seats of councillors.

In Karachi South district, 212 of the nominations filed for 31 seats of chairman and vice chairman were accepted and 10 were rejected. Similarly, 101 papers were rejected during the scrutiny of nominations filed for the 124 seats of general councillors. In all, 511 nominations were accepted for the general councillor seats in South district.

In Karachi West district, 423 nominations were accepted and 10 were rejected for elections on the 46 seats of chairman and vice chairman. Of the papers filed for 184 general councillors seats, 1,379 nominations were accepted and only 23 were rejected. Similarly, all the 18 nominations were accepted for the elections on the six district councillor seats.

In Malir district, 243 of the nominations filed for the 17 seats of chairman and vice chairman were accepted and eight were rejected. For the 68 general councillor seats, 959 nominations were accepted and 27 were rejected. Similarly, for the 68 district councillor seats, 165 nominations were accepted and nine were rejected.

In Korangi district, 278 of the nominations filed for the 37 seats of chairman and vice chairman were accepted and 11 others rejected. For the 148 general councillor seats, 788 nominations were accepted and 105 were rejected.

Polling will be held in all the six districts of Karachi on Dec 3 if polling date is not advanced by the ECP due to the Chehlum of Imam Hussain.
