GUJRAT: Equipped with modern gadgets, crime scene kits were handed over to the officials of the recently-constituted homicide investigation units of Gujrat police at a ceremony held at the Police Lines on Tuesday.

As many as 23 homicide units have been constituted for five police circles at the sub-divisional level in Gujrat, with an official of sub-inspector rank as investigation officer. These units are assigned to only investigate the cases of murder or incidents of any unnatural cause of death.

DPO Rai Zameerul Haq and SP Investigation Kamran Mumtaz handed over the kits which are specially designed for the investigation of the murder cases aiming at maximum evidence collection from the crime scene.

The DPO said nine murder cases including two incidents of death during road accidents had been handed over to the homicide units in Gujrat during the last one month as such cases registered after Sept 15 would be investigated by these units. He said every investigation officer (IO) was given a motorbike, a wireless set as well as a separate personal desk in the police station concerned and 60pc cost of the investigation would be provided to the IO soon after the registration of the case so that the police could not exploit the complainants for minting money.

The SP investigation would strictly monitor the working of these specialised units on a weekly basis.

Two murder cases registered in the Kunjah police station during the last one month have been traced by the homicide unit.

STOLEN BIKES: Police claimed on Tuesday to have recovered 21 stolen motorbikes from a three-member gang known as Shakila gang.

Gujrat SP Investigation Kamran Mumtaz told a press conference that the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) police had traced and arrested two members of Shakila gang -- Shakil of Jalalpur Jattan and Javed Iqbal of Tibbi Sekhuwan.
