China says border dispute with India contained

BEIJING: China said on Sunday the border dispute with India had been “contained” and the two countries should “do more” to strengthen cooperation to facilitate its settlement.
Addressing his annual press conference on the sidelines of a meeting of the National People’s Congress, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said a warm welcome awaits Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he makes his first visit to China later this year.

“Last September, President Xi Jinping made a historic visit to India. Picture of the two leaders working at a spinning wheel in Gujarat, the home state of prime minister, has spread far and wide in China,” Mr Wang said in response to a question from PTI about the bilateral relations at a nationally-televised and crowded press conference.

“Chinese people believe in reciprocating the courtesy of others. I am sure when Prime Minister Modi visits China later this year, he will be warmly welcomed by the Chinese government and people,” he said.
Terming the China-India boundary question a legacy of history, the minister said: “We have worked on it for many years and made some progress in the boundary negotiations.
“The dispute has been contained. At the moment, the boundary negotiations are in the process of building up small positive developments. It is like climbing a mountain and the going is tough because we are on the way up.
“This is all the more reason that we do more to strengthen China-India cooperation so that we can enable and facilitate the settlement of the boundary question,” he said.
Recalling the statement of one of China’s former top leaders, Deng Xiaoping, who said that unless India and China were developed there would be no Asian century, Mr Wang said: “China is prepared to work with India to implement important agreements reached by our leaders.
“Chinese dragon and Indian elephant should join in a duet to work for the early revitalisation of two ancient civilisations, common prosperity of the two emerging markets and amicable coexistence of two large neighbours,” he said.
Mr Modi is expected to visit China before May 6, around the time when his government completes one year in office.

Pakistan must learn this from china...for one kashmir they are loosing progress of entire Pakistan and facing terriosm too...if kashmir couldn't be part of pakistan in these 60 or 70 years then set aside this issue for coming 25 years and concentrate on development of Pakistan..when Pakistan come at a level of india then talk gradually on this and who knows kasmir get itself a resolution in the mean while..as an indian I m also feed up on kashmir issue....but for kashmir issue what Pakistan ia doing is actually destroying pakistan and not india and this has created a bad image of pakistan which will result into very less foreign investment into pakistan which is decreasing economic growth of Pakistan and thus Pakistan is living in 80s of world as of now that is 35 year behind world...

China finds trade relations with India highly lucrative. The annual trade (appx) $ 80 billions between the two countries is highly skewed in favour of China. The two countries have planned to reach a figure of $ 100 bil/year by end of this year. Moreover, the Chinese have indicated that they want to invest about $ 500 billion in India in the next 15 to 20 years. Currently about 10000 Chinese workers are working in India on various projects, and same number of Indians are working in China, mostly in IT & manufacturing field. The economic inter-dependency between the two countries has ensured that there will not be any major border friction between the two countries, forget about wars. Since 1967, not a single bullet has been fired at the border between the two countries.
There is a lot for Pakistan to learn from this. There is no point in keeping the relations between India & Pakistan hostage to a single issue of Kashmir. India took initiative in granting Pakistan 'Most Favoured Nation (MFN)' status in trade in 1996. Pakistan is still dragging its feet in reciprocating the gesture. If trade normalises, then Pakistan would benefit much more from it, as it gets access to one of the largest markets just across border and will gain by trading with a major emerging economy like India. Moreover, this would lead to heavy Indian investments in Pakistan, which would greatly help Pakistani economy. And if in addition to that, if transit facility between India and Central Asia is facilitated, Pakistan would become a regional trading hub greatly benefitting from logistics facilities. This would add several percentage points to GDP growth of Pakistan, making it a fast growing resurgent economy. More tourists from India in Pakistan would bring prosperity to entrepreneurs and ordinary Pakistanis due to trickle down effect.

Rational positioning from Chinese... let's work on economic issues first, establish great business relationships, open up trade routes along North-East and then decide the contentious boundaries.
Aksai Cheen and Arunachal Pradesh were both undecided boundaries when India gained freedom. China claimed Aksai Cheen while India claimed Arunachal Pradesh.
Both areas are important for trade (Aksai Cheen for access to Arabian sea, while Arunachal Pradesh for access to industrialized Southern China) and India-China have to decide the puts and takes in both areas to mutual satisfaction.

I agree with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Indo-Chinese border disputes will take decades to resolve and there is no point making them the focal point of our relationship. We must ensure that our trade with China touches USD 500 billion in the next 5 -7 years. Once we are interdependent on trade, the rest will fall into place.
The best part of the Ind0-China border dispute is that in spite of having fought a war in 1962, both parties have not made this dispute into an emotional and nationalistic issue. There is hardly any mention of this in the Indian or Chinese media and no public debate. Both nations are handling the issue maturely.

Open borders are possible between two equal nations, not between one failed state and one progressive state. In the last 5 years, 83,600 Pakistanis came to India for religious and cricket visits and only 67000 of them went back, 16000 potential terrorists are roaming around in the country. With China also it is not possible as it is a country which sends spies in other countries. We want trade and relations, but at arm's length. Let us agree that these 3 countries will never get too close.

Successive Governments keep begging from Organisation of Islamic Countries and China, Borrow from Any bank of the World, may be its ADB, World Bank, China Bank and Black Mailing US and European Countries by allowing them to use Pakistan as their base to fight war against Talibans in Afganistan or getting AID from them for not going into the kitty of China.

This is good news. In this region there are 4 nuclear powers - China, Russia, India and Pakistan. 2 are in SAARC and 2 are in SCO. If Pakistan and India finally have peace, entire SAARC will benefit. If SAARC and SCO join hands the centre of gravity of the world will shift here. All their peoples will benefit. Before 1959, when Tibet was an independent country, the McMohan line was accepted as borders between India and Tibet. After Tibet became part of China, this is contested and hence the problem. It is not just with India alone but all the countries with which Tibet was bordering. It may be recalled that Pakistan conceded Aksai Chin province of Pakistan Kashmir and also annexation of parts of Kazakhstan. The border problems with other countries China has is very well known to all. China is a mighty power and is very strong economically. The problems need to be amicably addressed.

India has been always trustworthy and balanced in International diplomacy, politics and friendship. While Pakistan is an emotional fool (sorry for writing bad word). Pakistani leaders cant explain that at one hand they want to exploit people's emotions in the name of Religion, and at another hand they want security and trust from nation which dont give importance to Religion. There cant be a long lasting brotherly friendship in this world. And above this China-Pakistan friendship is just an short lived strategy which can be pushed down where economy matters. China and India are growing economy. They needs each other (As well as other countries). Both are mature and not emotional fools. Both knows that the border dispute is for land which is not densly populated nor have much economic value. So better to keep those issues aside and have business. While for Pakistan, they wont get anything positive even if People of Kashmir separates from India (while fact is that majority of people recently participated in elections under Indian rule) They had accepted that they have future under progressing India, not in under infrastructure deprived country.

Wiser words have not been spoken than the ones by the chinese foreign minister about India and China being two ancient civilizations and we should work for the betterment of our people. Chinese are modest and dont try to score cheap points by saying we are way ahead of India etc. It is only the south asians that indulge in hyperbole. I sincerely hope Modi works with the chinese premier in ensuring that we do not get into a war like situation ever. China also should avoid any border skirmishes that can be portrayed as humiliating to Indians by the armchair champion TV hosts. We have a lot more in common us Indians, Pakistanis and Chinese than with europeans. Those who have lived abroad will understand what I am saying better. Indians love to hate Pakistanis and vice versa but whether we like it or not we more or less look the same to outsiders. I once went to a cricket match while working in Australia to support the aussies against the visiting pakistanis with friends but we were considered a pakistani group by the entire crowd and jeered at etc. That day I wholeheartedly cheered every Pakistani boundary. Something similar happened with respect to some bangladeshis in another situation and I was told by my coworkers that none of them could differentiate between us south asians. Atleast those of us that are educated must dwell on what the Chinese are advising and not get caught up with any warmongering. Infact India with Pakistan and Afghanisthan can help stabilize even Sino-Japanese, Iran-Saudi relations. What a wonderful world that would be!!

Pakistan, despite its problems, is considered a regional power, all heads of state visit it, including now Modi under one pretext of SAARC. Pakistan has taken off to heights, India does not know how to deal with. living in make believe world will not benefit India. Kashmir is coming back on the international communities agenda, better India face the fact that it has to be resolved, otherwise India will be left out from all the new economic power blocks that are forming with Pakistan at the core. Indian citizens will be left hungry and miserably, while expensive foreign arms stand rusting in warehouses and tarmacs.

The key word here is 'contained' -neutralised for now, till China has dealt with US. Then it will take monyul, loyul and tsayul, southern Tibet occupied illegally by India. We Sikhs do not want to fight with our Chinese neighbors because we notice the Chinese are truly good friends both in business and in relationships. Many Sikhs are married to Chinese. India and China need each other for economic reasons...and Pakistan and India are at loggerheads about a quarrel which is almost 70 years old!:):)

With a solid Banking and Finance system in place India is a prized partner for any trade. With 30% of world's workable manpower by 2020 India will definitely going to make it big as far as economy is concern. But the question is what about the other development parameter viz. education, health, security, human right etc.?? India and China both are way behind the developed nation.

@zak - India never sways, India has got very level headed policy in world affairs. India still votes against Israel when it comes to the question of Palestine. But India has good relations with Israel. India has border dispute with China but India and China trade is flourishing. India will never support anyone for anything wrong.

In the larger interest and welfare of millions of non kashmiris in both nations it is foolish to expend and waste our resources on this 'historical emotional baggage' The issue should be put on the back-burner and both nations should forge ties to move forward and not regress in time to medieval concepts of valour and heroism,.

@Begum Mumtaz, why it will be end for Pakistan? Are you trying to say that China will stop projects in Pakistan? Not likely. China needs Gwadar more than your own government. Yes China will become more cautious while making further investment in Pakistan.
Pakistan must learn to solve her problems on her own rather than search for best friends. Develop your economy and talent pool rather than military might and strategic assets.
