PESHAWAR: Law enforcement agencies have recovered Rana Jamil Hasan, a provincial lawmaker of the ruling PML-N who was kidnapped earlier this year, a statement from the Governor House in Peshawar said Monday.

Rana Jamil Hasan, who was also known as ‘Gudo Khan’, was recovered from the Pakistan-Afghan border areas and is currently under the safe custody of the Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, said the statement issued by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan’s office.

Rana Jamil Hassan will soon be shifted safely to his home, said the statement which did not disclose any further details about how the Punjab Assembly lawmaker was found or freed.

Sources in the law enforcement agencies also confirmed that the MPA was recovered from near the Pak-Afghan border area.

“Security forces recovered Khan after a successful operation from an area in Khyber tribal region that borders Afghanistan,” a senior official in the KP government told news agency AFP.

Rana Jamil was kidnapped on May 31, 2014 on the motorway near Sheikhupura in Punjab province.

The MPA and his wife were going to Islamabad from their hometown Bucheki when people in two cars stopped his vehicle and dragged him out. His wife was abducted at the same time but released hours later.

The kidnappers asked the MPA’s wife to arrange Rs50 million for his release and took him away.

Rana Jamil was elected from PP-174 in the 2013 general elections.

KP governor Sardar Mehtab congratulated personnel of the law enforcement agencies for their efforts and directed for his safe shifting to Peshawar.

No further official details were available from either the KP Governor House or law enforcement officials on whether authorities paid a ransom for the release, or which group was involved in the abduction of the lawmaker.
