LAHORE: At least six persons died on Wednesday in two incidents in the provincial capital—four of them were electrocuted and two others succumbing to the injuries they suffered in roof collapse.

According to Rescue 1122 and Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) officials, four persons were fixing a hoarding on the rooftop of a house on Daulat Khan Road in the Shahdara area during rain.

The officials said the four men suffered a massive electric shock when the iron frame of the hoarding accidentally touched the high-voltage electric wires passing near the roof. As a result, all the four died on the spot.

Rescue 1122 ambulances called to the spot shifted the bodies to Mayo Hospital.

Later, a Lesco statement claimed that the electrocution incident was the result of “negligence” by the shopkeeper who was getting the hoarding fixed without any precaution or informing the staff concerned. It further claimed that no one informed Lesco or sought permission to fix the hoarding on the roof.

Taking notice of the incident, Lesco Chief Executive Ramzan Butt ordered an inquiry into the incident to fix the responsibility for the electrocutions. He regretted the loss of four lives in the incident.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed a deep sense of grief over electrocution of four men in Shahdara, extending condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.

She sought a report on the incident from the authorities concerned.

In the other incident, two persons died and as many others were injured when the roof of a house collapsed in Meher Town on Bedian Road during rain.

The deceased were identified as Adil (25), and Goga (45). The injured, Rasheed and another unidentified man, were shifted to Avicenna Medical Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, weather of the city became pleasant after it rained in different parts of the provincial capital on Wednesday.

According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), maximum 8mm rain was reported in Nishter Town, while there were only traces in the remaining areas of the city.

PDMA: According to a fact sheet issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued on the flood situation, in the last 24 hours, Gujrat received 86mm rain, Narowal 37mm, Multan 28mm, DG Khan 27mm and Jhelum received up to 22mm rain.

Rain was also recorded in Sialkot, Attock, Mangla, Murree, Rawalpindi, Layyah, Mianwali and Kot Addu.

As per the PDMA forecast, rain is expected in most districts of Punjab in the next 24 hours. The sixth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue till August 7.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has issued instructions to the administration to remain alert.

He said that there is a low-level flood in the river Indus at Tarbela, while water flow at Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa is at normal level. The flow of water in the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers is at normal level.

He said the water flow in the rivers and streams adjacent to the major rivers is also at normal level.

According to the PDMA, the Tarbela Dam is 95 percent full, while the Mangla Dam is 62pc of its capacity. The water level in Indian dams is 56pc, it added.

The PDMA urged people to take precautionary measures during the ongoing rainy season, especially barring children from entering rainwater drains, low-lying areas, rivers and canals. This year, 164 people have so far died in various rain-related accidents.

In the last 24 hours, six people were killed and three injured due to accidents due to various monsoon rains. Financial assistance is being provided to the affected families. 582 citizens were injured, 216 houses were affected and 121 livestock were killed.
