GUJRAT: Seven districts of Gujranwala region will get 206 electric buses that will ply different routes as feeder buses to the Gujranwala Metro Bus Service.

The Punjab government has allocated a sum of Rs 16 billion to launch the echo-friendly electric buses across the division.

This was stated by Gujranwala Commissioner Naveed Haider Sheerazi while talking to Dawn on Wednesday.

Elaborating the government plan, he said that the project was being launched as per a direction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. “Such a transport system will not only cater to the needs of public but will also help reduce pollution,” the commissioner said.

Sheerazi said out of the total estimated cost, at least Rs7.5bn would be spent on the establishment of charging stations across the region whereas the remaining Rs 8.5bn would be spent on purchasing electric buses. Mr Sheerazi said these echo-friendly electric buses might be delivered in the month of September this year.

Another senior official said that around 88 buses would be given to Gujranwala district. The Sialkot district will get 45 buses, followed by 28 to Gujrat and 16 to Hafizabad districts whereas Mandi Bahauddin will get 12 followed by seven buses for Narowal and Wazirabad districts.
