SWABI: The people of Razaar tehsil took to the streets on Monday against the killing of a man allegedly by the police.

Relatives of the deceased and police officials made conflicting claims about the incident, which occurred on the first day of Eidul Azha.

The deceased was identified as Qamar Zaman, belonging to Parmuli village. The relatives claimed he was killed when personnel of Parmuli police station opened fire at him.

However, the police said Zaman opened fire on police during a raid, and he was killed in retaliatory action.

They claimed the deceased was wanted in various cases.

Jirga gives police five days to register case against Razaar DSP, Parmuli SHO

District police officer Mohammad Azhar said the man was an ice drug addict and was also involved in motorcycle thefts. He said the man was killed when police attempted to arrest him.

“An inquiry has been initiated into the incident and cross version of the deceased family has also been registered,” DPO Azhar said.

Contrary to the police claim, the residents declared that the deceased was innocent and police killed him unjustly. They argued the police generated a false narrative to justify their heinous act of killing.

The people protested in front of the Parmuli police station, placing the body on the road. The protesters demanded that an FIR should be registered against the SHO and other cops over the killing.

The protesters also alleged that the police after killing the man dragged his body through the streets.

Ghulam Haqqani, mayor of Razaar tehsil, Awami National Party district president Asifur Rehman, Pakistan Peoples Party district president Ali Khan and other leaders reached the spot and held a jirga on the premises of the Parmuli police station, while stressing that FIR should be registered against all those policemen who were allegedly involved in the killing.

They claimed the police agreed to register an FIR against the erring police personnel.

However, another jirga was held when the police dilly-dallied on the mater, where leaders of political parties gave the district administration and the police a five-day deadline to register an FIR against Razaar DSP and SHO Parmuli, or they would demonstrate in front of the offices of the deputy commissioner and district police officer.

In a separate development, two teenagers from Peshawar drowned in Pehur canal while bathing on Monday, rescue officials said.

A Rescue 1122 official said the bodies of Zubair Khan and Abdullah, both 15 years of age, were handed over to their families.
