Digital privacy

Published

AS internet penetration deepens, a large portion of the population remains vuln-erable to cyberthreats and the misuse of personal data owing to lack of awareness about digital privacy. With over 60 per cent of Pakistan’s population using the internet, privacy awareness has become a fundamental need.

Many users unknowingly disclose their sensitive information online, falling prey to identity theft, financial fraud, and data breaches. A gap in holistic education about secure browsing, privacy settings, and the risks associated with sharing personal data leaves countless people exposed to exploitation. Furthermore, recent global incidents of data breaches and cyberattacks underscore the critical need for individuals to understand their privacy rights and adopt safe online practices. It is important to understand that with each data breach or privacy violation, Pakistan’s digital economy risks losing the trust it so desperately needs to thrive in the modern world.

The government, private sector and civil society must collaborate to promote digital literacy and privacy education. Nationwide awareness campaigns, particularly targeting young people and new internet users, could empower indi-viduals to protect their data. Schools, workplaces and community centres can serve as valuable spaces for imparting such knowledge.

Ensuring privacy and security is integral to both personal protection and the advancement of a secure, trusted digital ecosystem.

The policymakers and educators should target digital privacy awareness and safeguard the future of our digital society.
