Ways of the elite

IN a state where people have been stru-ggling to get even their fundamental rights, their so-called representatives are busy enjoying their extravagant lifestyles. However, as per the social contract, the core purpose behind the formation of a state is to secure the rights of the people, but the state of Pakistan seems to have failed to do so.

Part of the elite structure is the country’s bureaucratic machinery. According to a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a significant proportion of public expenditure and national wealth is spent on retaining Pakistan’s high-profile bureaucracy, which compromises the resources allocated for public deve-lopment, and threatens the national economy because of the considerable fiscal consequences.

In order to ‘protect’ themselves from the potential harm posed by the people they are supposed to serve or lead, Pakistani elite class moves around only after extensive security and protocol arrangements are in place. What happens on the roads when these self-styled VIPs move is none of their business, it seems.

The trouble caused to the public does not bother them. The arrogant demeanour of their security staff is something that clearly makes them feel a little more elite in their head.

The people pay taxes to receive some benefit, and not to maintain the lavish lifestyles adopted by the elite class of the country. But nobody seems to care.
