SHANGLA: The recent monsoon rains have increased the flow of the enchanting Machar waterfall, which had declined significantly over the past few years.

Machar is a scenic small town, lying about five kilometres from the district headquarters, Alpuri, and seven kilometres from the Shangla Top, surrounded by thick alpine forests, offering a marvelous sight to the nature lovers.

Machar waterfall is located in the Machar hamlet, and tourists travelling on the Bisham-Swat Road and the Karakoram Highway stop at the breathtaking waterfall, which originates from the Machar top.

Aimal Khan, a tourist from Peshawar who was on his way to Gilgit-Baltistan along with his friends, stopped his car on the Bisham-Swat Road near the waterfall. “As we came out of the car the waterfall welcomed us with its showers as it cascades from a height of approximately 120 feet, enchanting us,” he said.

While pointing to the surrounding thick pine forests and greenery, said the melodious waterfall and fascinating beauty of the Shangla valley was really captivating. He said they came here before visiting Kalam because they had become fed up of the scorching heat of Peshawar. “We are really enjoying the majestic landscapes, waterfalls, natural springs and cool fresh air.”

Roman Khan Khalil, also from Peshawar, said he fell in love with the serene nature of Shangla, especially the breathtaking and cascading Machar waterfall.

“We have taken pictures and made videos of the waterfall to be uploaded on our social media accounts to remember this memorable trip in the times to come. We enjoyed every second of our trip. We were welcomed and offered with organic foods by the local people,” he said.

Habibullah, a forest guard, said the department had planted pine saplings in 2020, which had now grown up into trees, adding to the beauty of the area.

He said the water flow had declined considerably some years ago, but the recent heavy rains had not only improved the flow in the waterfalls but also in the natural springs.

Habibullah said Shangla was famous for its scenic beauty and mesmerising pastures and mountains. He said Shangla people were also famous for their hospitality.
