KARACHI: Though the city remained heavily overcast on Wednesday, most areas experienced intermittent light to moderate showers affecting life in the metropolis.

At least two persons died from electrocution in New Karachi and Jamshed Quarters areas.

Rainwater accumulated in many parts and roads of the metropolis, causing traffic jams on various arteries during the evening rush hours.

Power supply to some parts of the city remained suspended till late in the night due to some localised faults.

According to the Met department’s data, Gadap town was the only area in the city getting a heavy rainfall of 42.4mm followed by Orangi Town 29.4mm, Surjani Town 24.1mm, North Karachi 24mm, Nazimabad 14.6mm, Bin Qasim 12.5mm, Gulshan-i-Maymar 12.2mm, PAF Masroor Base 10mm, Keamari 6.5mm, Korangi 6.4mm, Jinnah Terminal 5.6mm, PAF Faisal Base 6mm, Met Complex (University Road) 5.1mm and DHA Phase II 1.2mm.

“This spell is in its last stages and expected to be over by Wednesday (today) afternoon in Karachi. Some areas might see light rain,” said Chief Meteorologist Dr Sardar Sarfaraz.

According to him, the next spell in Karachi is expected from the evening/night of August 5 that would last for three to four days.

“The monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal would enter from eastern Sindh and gradually spread to most parts of the province. As of now, the system is expected to induce far heavier showers than so far experienced this year,” he said.

According to the department’s advisory, Wednesday is likely to remain largely cloudy and humid with some areas seeing light rain/drizzle. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 33-35 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 34 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity recorded at 5pm was 82 per cent.
