GUJRAT: A known doctor, who was also a medical college teacher, was shot dead apparently in a targeted attack on his car, while another medic was slightly injured in the incident occurring near Rescue 1122 station on old GT Road, in the precincts of Civil Lines police, early on Tuesday morning.

Police sources says Dr Zeeshan Anwar was going to the Combined Military Hospital Medical College, Kharian, where he was an associate professor, driving his car, along with another doctor, Usman Jameel, sitting in the front seat.

As Dr Anwer stopped his car near the Rescue 1122 station to wait for a friend, two unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on him. As a result, Dr Anwer suffered two bullets on the neck and was critically injured.

The other doctor was also slightly injured when a piece of the shatter windowpane of the car hit him.

The attackers fled the scene on the motorbike.

The critically injured doctor was shifted to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital (ABSTH) where he succumbed to his bullet wounds. His body was later handed over to his family after autopsy.

The teams of police and the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) reached the spot and collected evidences from the crime scene.

City circle DSP Asad Ishaq told Dawn that police had got the footage of the incident recorded by a closed-circuit TV cameras installed in the area and started investigation.

Sources in the family of the deceased say that Dr Anwer did not have any dispute or enmity.

Police have registered a case against unidentified killers under sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the report of Amir Hafeez, a relative of the deceased.

His funeral prayers were offered at Zahoor Elahi Cricket Stadium and attended by the medical fraternity and others.

He was buried in a local graveyard in the evening.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Medical Association’s Gujrat chapter held a meeting and expressed its concern over the poor law and order situation in the city.

The association condemned the brutal murder of an innocent doctor.

A statement issued by Gujrat PMA President Dr Maqsood Zahid and Young Doctors Association’s Dr Junaid Malik gave the police and local administration Nov 16 deadline to trace and arrest the killers, saying otherwise the medical fraternity across the district would resort to strike in hospitals, besides holding sit-ins and rallies in protest against the murder.
