THE Sindh Finance Department issued a notification recently, stating that from July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2020, government employees who died during service or after retirement will be compensated under the group insurance scheme. Under this scheme, the Sindh government has also increased compensation for government servants who died on or after retirement from July 1, 2020.

This surprising unilateral decision of the government has frustrated many because the compensation is only for the deceased government employees which is an injustice to the retired civil servants of that period.

The group insurance must be granted to every retired government employee whether he or she dies during the service or after the retirement, because the charges of the group insurance scheme are deducted from the salaries of all employees every month.

The government should review the group insurance scheme, keeping in view the services of retired government servants.
