SWABI: A man killed his brother and injured his cousin over a property dispute here on Tuesday.

The incident was reported in Ormal Dheri area of Yar Hussain union council.

Abdul Qadeer, the injured cousin of suspected assailant Shahzeb, told police that his brother died of bullet injuries on the spot, while he was injured.

The police said they had arrested the suspected killer and seized the kalakov allegedly used in the crime.

Also, the police arrested 14 people in different parts of Swabi district for violating the ban on celebratory gunfire on Monday night.

The officials said most arrests were made in Razaar tehsil, while four were reported in Parmuli union council and two in Yar Hussain union council.

The residents criticised the people for failing to check celebratory gunfire and explosion of firecrackers on chand raat on Monday.

Two days before Eidul Fitr, district police officer Syed Khalid Hamdani met local ulema and urged them to play due role in checking the firing in the air.

The police also engaged the local government’s representatives and jirga members for the purpose, while a full-fledged awareness campaign was launched on social media against celebratory gunfire.

The people were also warned against firing in the air, while walks were held in every tehsil headquarters to educate people about the harms of celebratory gunfire.

However, as the news of the sighting of Shawwal moon was telecast by TV channels, people resorted to celebratory gunfire until late hours of night.

Abbas Ali of Topi city said both the frequent celebratory gunfire and explosion of firecrackers disturbed the residents, who opted to stay indoors for own safety.

Naveed Khan of Parmuli village complained that the police had miserably failed to check the firing in the air on the eve of Eidul Fitr.
