BAHAWALPUR: A bill defaulter allegedly shot dead on Monday a Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) lineman who was part of a raiding team that had earlier removed a transformer installed at the suspect’s tubewell at Munshiwala, about 10 kilometre from here.

According to Mepco’s Lodhran Executive Engineer Abdul Rauf Sanghera, the suspect Ahmed Din had defaulted on payment of power arrears to the tune of Rs0.75 million.

A Mepco team comprising Ahmad Hassan and SDOs Falak Shair and Allah Wario removed transformer from Din’s tubewell and were returning when the suspect along with his 12 accomplices opened fire on the officials.

Ahmad Hassan, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle, was hit by a bullet and died on the spot.

The EXEN told Dawn on telephone that a case had been registered by Lodhran police and three csuspects had been arrested while the body of lineman was shifted to the mortuary of the district headquarters hospital for a postmortem examination.

SEIZED: Qaimpur police in a crackdown on Sunday night seized 90kg beef of a dead buffalo at Bhatta Rangean Khan village near Hasilpur.

The police also seized the truck being used for transporting the unwholesome beef and booked six suspects including one Azam.

According to police sources, the action was taken on a tip-off.

The arrested suspect who was nabbed by a village mob told police that a butcher Muhammad Haji was involved in supply of unwholesome beef to a Multan butcher Nadeem with the help of his accomplices Ghulam Hussain and Allah Bachaya.

He said the beef was also supplied to Bahawalpur, Muzzaffargarh, Vehari Hasilpur, and Khairpur Tamewali

The police registered an FIR against Muhammad Haji, Azam, Abdul Sattar, Aamir, Nadeem and Mona.
