DR Malik Baloch has been recently elected as chief minister of Balochistan. He mentioned that health and education were his top priority.

The educational system in Balochistan is in the worst condition, especially primary education. Teachers of the section are not properly educated and equipped enough to carry out teaching assignments. They are mostly absent from duty.

Our basic educational structure demands a major overhaul.

When Dr Malik was provincial education minister, he took some positive steps.

He himself visited schools and colleges to observe the classes and consult the teaching staff to root out the culture of cheating.

Chief Minister Dr Malik Baloch said in his first speech on the floor that the mother tongue would be the mode of instruction in the province; it is a commendable decision.

The medium of instruction in the mother tongue is important for educational pursuits.

It is a recognised fact all over the world that when children are taught in their mother tongue they do not feel reluctant to go to school and pick up concepts better. They also express themselves in a better way.

Their confidence level also builds up.

I request the chief minister to take steps in this direction as soon as possible to teach in the mother tongue at the primary level.
