LAHORE, Aug 10: The meteorological office forecast rain for Lahore on Saturday after Friday’s showers that inundated many low-lying areas.

It also forecast scattered thundershowers with isolated heavy falls over North and Northeast Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir in the next 24 hours.

Rain was heavy in the downtown and gusty winds kept temperatures tolerable. The Met office reported 42mm of rain at its Jail Road observatory and 11mm at the airport. The velocity of the wind was 39km per hour in the city and 50km per hour at the airport.

The maximum temperature was 32.3 degrees Celsius and the minimum 26.5 degrees Celsius, with 87 per cent humidity in the morning and 69 per cent in the evening.

The Met office also reported that Gujranwala received 43mm of rain, Chakwal (22mm), Parachinar (20mm), Islamabad Zero Point (10mm), Kotli, Islamabad airport and Mandi Bahauddin (9mm each), Saidu Sharif, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhelum and Sialkot airport (4mm each) and Kakul (2mm).

Meanwhile, top officials of various civic agencies, the city district government and divisional administrations and local parliamentarians rushed to various parts of the city soon after a downpour started on Friday morning and monitored the draining out of rainwater in low-lying areas.

Commissioner Jawad Rafique Malik, DCO Noorul Amin Mengal, Wasa Managing Director Mian Abdullah, MPAs and the others concerned paid surprise visits to different areas and inspected arrangements for draining out the accumulated rainwater.

The commissioner monitored the rainwater drain-out operation mainly at the Lakshmi Chowk and various other places.

The DCO inspected Mozang Chowk, Lawrence Road, Davies Road, Ek Moria Pul and Jail Road and supervised the water-drainage work there.

Several PML-N lawmakers visited Lakshmi Chowk, GPO Chowk, Jail Road and interior parts of the city and got the accumulated rainwater drained out through Wasa.
