Inflation rises in seven months

ISLAMABAD, Feb 14: Inflation rate based on Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) during the first seven months of this fiscal, July-January 2001-2002, surged by 2.09 per cent, 2.53 per cent and 2.53 per cent, respectively, over the corresponding period of 2000-2001.

Official figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) on Thursday, showed the inflation increased by 5.35pc, 4.88pc and 6.71pc during 2000-2001 in comparison with the period of 1999-2000.

And in 1999-2000, the rate of inflation increased by 1.84pc, 3.37pc and 1.53pc, respectively, over the same period of 1998-99.

The analysis of data for the last three years for the same period indicated that the increase in SPI, CPI and WPI was lower as compared to 2000-2001, but higher as compared to 1999-2000 except CPI.

On monthly basis, the inflation rates based on SPI and CPI for January, 2002, increased by 2.02pc and 2.31pc, respectively, while WPI decreased by 0.46pc over the same month of last year. It increased in January, 2001, by 6.46pc, 4.67pc and 9.33pc, respectively, over January 2000.

And in January 2000, the rate of inflation for SPI and CPI increased by 0.62pc and 3.43pc, respectively, while WPI decreased by 0.41pc over January 1999.

The analysis of data for the last three years indicated that the increase in SPI, CPI and WPI during January 2002, was lower as compared to January 2001, but higher in case of SPI and WPI as compared to January 2000, except CPI.

The inflation rates based on SPI, CPI and WPI for January, 2002 increased by 0.17pc, 0.26pc and 0.17pc, respectively, over December 2001.

During January 2001, CPI and WPI decreased by 0.16pc and 0.84pc, respectively, but SPI increased by 0.15pc over December 2000. However, CPI and WPI for January 2000, increased by 0.20pc and 0.30pc, respectively, whereas SPI decreased by 0.23pc over December 1999.

On the other hand, during five weeks of January 2002, SPI increased at an average of 0.17pc over December 2001. While CPI during January 2002, increased by 0.26pc over December 2001, and increased by 2.31pc over corresponding month of last year.
