TOBA TEK SINGH: One person was killed and six other family members were critically injured on Wednesday when armed men stormed into a house in Jhang and attacked the residents.

According to details, Jhang Government Graduate College Prof Muhammad Ashraf’s home, located in Basti Malahanwali, was attacked by his opponents allegedly over an old enmity. As a result, the professor’s cousin died and six members of the family were injured.

Jhang City police said several armed men stormed into the house and opened indiscriminate fire and tortured men, women and children of the family.

The police had registered an FIR against 17 people, including 12 nominated suspects.

The deceased was identified as Muhammad Iqbal Anjum (45), while the injured included Prof Muhammad Ashraf (36), his brother Abdul Rahman (44) and daughter Aqsa Bibi (10), Ashraf Hayat (55), Muhammad Ramzan (22) and Salman Sajid (17).

The injured were shifted to the DHQ Hospital, while Iqbal Anjum was referred to the Faisalabad’s Allied hospital.

Speaking to reporters at the DHQ Hospital, Prof Ashraf said his opponents had murdered his maternal uncle and the case was currently under trial in a local court in Jhang.

He alleged that the attackers had been threatening his family to withdraw the case and refrain from testifying in court.

A spokesperson for Jhang police said that some of the suspects had been arrested and raids were ongoing to apprehend the remaining culprits.

ARRESTED: Faisalabad FIA circle on Wednesday arrested two men allegedly involved in issuance of Pakistani computerised national identity cards (CNICs) to Afghan nationals.

An FIA spokesperson said that accused Babar Bashir and Muhammad Riaz had also allegedly extorted Rs2.5 million from a citizen to send him on work visa to Albania.

They also fraudulently received 1,000 euros to send a man to Romania, he added.

Meanwhile, an FIA special court sent two arrested bankers on four-day physical remand on the request of the FIA.

Bankers Usman Khan and Shahzad Arif were accused of misappropriating Rs35 million.

ACCIDENT: A tea shop owner and his son died after their motorcycle collided with a donkey cart in Jhang.

Both deceased Mumtaz Ahmad and his son Muhammad Farhan were traveling on the Gojra Road near Ayub Chowk when the donkey cart coming from opposite direction hit their motorcycle.

APPOINTMENT: The Punjab governor as chancellor has appointed Prof Dr Shazia Ramzan, the chairperson of Department of Islamic Studies as the dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF).

She is the founder dean of the faculty and has assumed the charge.

She has authored five books and numerous research papers. She began her academic career in 2003 from UAF as a lecturer, obtained her PhD from the Punjab University in 2011 and completed her post-doctorate in 2023 from the same institute.

She was promoted as professor of Islamic studies in 2024.

She is a member of the Syndicate and has also served on high-level committees and is currently a member of the Finance and Planning Committee of the varsity.

SENTENCED: Fesco Pirmahal City subdivision SDO Sajid Bashir has been sentenced to one-month imprisonment by Pirmahal Judicial Magistrate Umar Hayat Jawad for disobeying court orders.

In his previous order, the magistrate had restrained the convict from removing an electricity meter of a citizen but he violated the court orders.

The court also directed Pirmahal police SHO to produce him before the court after arresting him.
