RAWALPINDI: As recent rains filled reservoirs of the twin cities, spillways of Rawal Dam were opened on Sunday morning after water levels touched 1,752 feet.

Punjab Irrigation Subdivisional Officer Arslan Abbas told Dawn that the spillways of the dam were opened for the first time this year. Before opening the spillways, sirens sounded for 30 minutes so that people along Korang Nullah would refrain from fishing and bathing downstream.

Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) spokesperson Umer Farooq said the dam will provide adequate water to Rawalpindi till winter, calling on people not to waste water. Wasa is continuing its campaign to preserve water as unjustified extraction would create problems, he added.
