KARACHI: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Friday held a women convention at Bagh-i-Jinnah, demanding respectable and dedicated transportation services for Karachiites, durable peace in the city and solution to other problems.

Addressing the convention, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that tens of thousands of women in Karachi were part of the labour force in factories and offices, but they were compelled to work under the cruel contract system instead of doing direct permanent jobs.

Highlighting the plight of working women and other issues surrounding them in the city, he urged the women in the city to take active part in the Karachi Rights Movement in order to get their due rights.

He said that unfortunately the political parties mandated by Karachiites in the past raised the slogans of women rights, but practically did nothing for them. Instead they exploited the working women by plundering and further corrupting the system of governance.

He said that practically there was no transportation system in the city and working women had no other choice, but to suffer in old buses and rickshaws.

He said the government had introduced the Green Line project, which was partially functional, and another project called Orange Line, that too was ineffective because of its short length and inappropriate route.

JI women wing leader Attia Nisar, Rakhshinda Muneeb Asma Safeer and others also spoke.
