RAWALPINDI: The District Quality Control Board sent 13 cases of clinics and shops to the drug court after they were found selling expired drugs and veterinary medicines for humans.

A meeting was presided over by Executive District Officer Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal and attended by Board Secretary Abid Saeed Baig and other officials.

The meeting discussed 31 cases against medical stores, clinics and hospitals that were involved in malpractices.

More than five clinics were found prescribing veterinary medicines for treatment of human patients.

“The clinics were providing veterinary drugs to patients suffering from upper respiratory and skin allergy, which could be dangerous for them. Some veterinary vitamins are also being used for human beings,” Abid Saeed Baig told Dawn after the meeting.

A gynae clinic located at Sir Syed Chowk in Rawalpindi was being run by a lady health visitor who posed as a gynae specialist.

During investigation, the health department also found that the woman did not have a medical degree but was still conducting surgeries and ultra sound examinations.

Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal told Dawn that District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajid Zafar had directed the health department to launch the campaign against chemists and drug stores in the district.

He said the drug inspectors would visit all markets and shopping malls to check the drugs.
