PTV awards

Published July 18, 2010

While it brought back fond memories of the time when PTV was the sole TV channel in the country (and had some really quality programmes to offer), the ceremony for the 15th PTV Awards show left many wondering why can't the state-run network keep abreast with modern trends.

It was a nice, decent function on the whole, make no mistake. But there are a few aspects of modern-day television broadcasting that the channel must look into. The style of coverage, the multiple-camera shoot of the show had no different 'feel' than what the network used to come up with in the '80s (three decades ago). These days television networks use cranes and jibs to give a slicker (and grander) look to the recording of shows, which PTV either doesn't use or make minimal use of.

Graphics is another aspect that leaves much to be desired. The names flashed on the bigger screen to highlight nominees in different categories lacked contemporariness (what does the category Best Negative Role mean?) These are things that don't take much to improve upon.

Last but not least, PTV must start catering to younger audiences (not Faisal Qureshi and Mani whose skit was quite unfunny). It's noble to always include legendary oldies on every momentous occasion, but it gives off the vibe as if PTV doesn't like to get out of its golden past. Inclusion of a bit of youthful, contemporary (if not modern) artistes as its regular guests in the audience (not just on stage) will do it the world of good.
