WASHINGTON, Sept 27: President Barack Obama spoke by phone with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Friday — the first conversation between American and Iranian presidents in more than 30 years.

Mr Obama said after speaking with Mr Rouhani that he believes the US and Iran can reach a comprehensive solution over the latter’s nuclear programme.

Mr Obama said he and Mr Rouhani had both directed their teams to work quickly to pursue an agreement.

Washington will coordinate closely with its allies, including Israel, which considers an Iranian nuclear weapon capability to be an existential threat, the US president added.—AP
