KARACHI: Pakistan’s top golfer Shabbir Iqbal has said he is keen to represent the country once again in the World Cup to be held in China later this year.

‘‘It was a dream come true when Mohammad Munir and I became the first Pakistani team to represent the country in the 2009 World Cup,” Shabbir said in an interview on Tuesday as he prepared for the Sindh Open golf which begins at the Arabian Sea Country Club from July 8.

Shabbir said he and Munir will be appearing in the qualifying rounds for the World Cup, being staged in Kuala Lumpur next month.

He said that in 2009 out of 22 nations only the Philippines, Singapore and Pakistan had qualified for the World Cup.

‘‘Out of the qualifying teams from 20-25 countries, only top three will make it to the golf World Cup,’’ said the 33-year-old.

He called for support from the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) and the sponsors in order to feature on the Asian Tour events.

He said playing in one Asian tour costs Rs200,000 to Rs300,000 which was a very expensive affair for the players.

‘‘During the last ten years, I have been able to appear in just four international events because it is very expensive,” said Shabbir.—APP
