The real name for abdominals (abs) is the rectus abdominis muscle, a paired muscle running vertically on each side of the front wall of the abdomen. The two parallel muscles are separated by a midline band of connective tissue called the linea alba (white line). It extends from the pubic crest upwards to the mid point of the sternum.

A set of well defined six-pack abs are the muscle bellies. While it is relatively easier for men, some women too have achieved six packs, like Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, the former Baywatch babe Brooke Burns, Shakira and Jessica Alba.

Although possible, most experts say it’s rare for women to develop them. Your six-pack abs won’t be visible until your body fat goes down. For women developing six-pack abs is most likely to be achieved in the early teens as it is really a pre-cellulite phenomenon. With age it gets more difficult because women acquire more subcutaneous body fat. However, with the right genetics and strict exercise programme, even people in their 30s and 40s can have six-pack abs.

Genetically, women are at a disadvantage because their bodies store more fat than men as women’s bodies are designed to bear and nourish babies and fat is the primary energy source. Men generally lose weight quicker as a result of regular exercise.

Also, it may not be advisable for women to lower body fat enough to have a six-pack as it may disturb their hormone balance.
