ISLAMABAD President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday appointed Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Sardar Mohammad Aslam as judge of the Supreme Court with effect from March 9.

A notification issued by the Law and Justice Division said the president had made the appointment in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by Article 177 of the Constitution.

Justice Aslam is retiring as IHC chief on March 8. He was appointed head of the Islamabad High Court in February 2008 after its establishment through a Presidential Constitution (Amendment) Order, 2007, on December 14.

He started his career as advocate in 1973 and practiced as advocate of the High Court and the Supreme Court.

He was appointed Deputy Attorney General in the year 2001. In 2003, he was appointed Additional Judge at the Lahore High Court.

According to the APP, he became president of the Kahuta Bar Association in 1975, member Punjab Bar Council in 1988, President Rawalpindi Bar Association in 1993 and President High Court Bar Association, Rawalpindi in 1999.

Also on Saturday, President Zardari appointed Justice M. Bilal Khan, Judge Lahore High Court, as Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court with effect from March 9.
