KARACHI: Teachers and employees at the University of Karachi (KU) staged another major protest outside the administration block on Monday and vowed to continue their boycott of semester examinations until all their demands, including payment of dues and a probe into the financial crisis in the varsity, are fulfilled.
Speaking at the protest, Karachi University Teachers’ Society (Kuts) President Dr Ghufran Alam said their campaign had entered a new phase, with participants now demanding the removal of the vice chancellor in addition to the payment of outstanding dues.
He said the unity of teachers, officers and employees had now forced the administration to engage in negotiations.
Another teachers’ representative Dr Zeeshan Iqbal said the university’s financial problems were the result of administrative mismanagement rather than a lack of funds. He claimed that losses of nearly Rs1.5 billion had been incurred over the past seven years while teachers’ and employees’ dues remained unpaid.
Employees Welfare Association President Zahid Hussain Baloch praised teachers, employees and officers for continuing the protest during the Eid holidays. He said the movement would continue until there was practical progress on their demands.
The speakers criticised the university administration over its handling of financial affairs and called for a full audit of the university’s finances.
Representatives of employee groups also raised concerns about delayed promotions and the lack of basic facilities on campus, such as point buses for students and better infrastructure.
