QUETTA: Several Afghan nationals engaged in unlawful financial activities have been deported to their country as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Balochistan Zone successfully secured convictions against multiple individuals for illegal hawala/hundi and currency exchange operations, officials said on Saturday.

According to FIA officials, cases had been registered against the accused under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA). Following effective prosecution, the court of the District and Sessions Judge in Chaman handed down prison sentences to the accused in different cases.

Officials said that in one case, the court also ordered the confiscation of Rs1.8 million in favour of the national exchequer.

The FIA Balochistan Zone stated that the cases against suspects arrested during the ongoing crackdown on hawala-hundi and illegal currency exchange were presented effectively before the court.

Investigating Inspector Mohammad Idrees Khan and Assistant Director Nadeem Ghaffar pursued the cases professionally, which resulted in the convictions, officials added.

Director FIA Balochistan Zone Mohammad Behram Khan said indiscriminate action against financial crimes would continue to safeguard the national economy, adding that those involved in illegal businesses such as hawala-hundi would be dealt with strictly.
