Nine workers killed in Mardan mine collapse

MARDAN: Nine workers were killed when a marble mine collapsed in Rustam tehsil here on Tuesday evening, rescue officials said.

The tragic incident occurred in the Nangabad area. Initially, six bodies and three injured were recovered from the site, Rescues 1122 officials said.

The officials said 12 labourers were trapped inside the mine.

The deceased, identified as Khalid, Azmat Khan, and Khair Zameen Shah, belonged to Swabi. Tariq and Khan Zaman belonged to Buner. Similarly, Wasif, Asfandiyar, Malang and Abdul Wahab hailed from Mohmand.

The two injured, identified as Ziyad and Takht Mohammad, were also from Swabi.

Besides, one labourer, identified as Khyber from Mohmand district, was still missing.

Talking to Dawn, a Rescue 1122 official said three station house in-charges and about 50 rescue personnel under the supervision of district emergency officer Syed Shoib Mansoor took part in the operation.

Similarly, eight ambulances, three excavators and one recovery vehicle were used in the rescue operation, he said.
