KARACHI: Citizens were taken aback when many areas in the metropolis were pounded by marble-sized hail accompanied by light to moderate showers on Tuesday.

Footage that went viral on social media showed people expressing their surprise over the phenomenon.

However, Chief Meteorologist Ameerr Hyder Laghari said that hail formation usually occurred in winter rains during the months from February to April.

He said that there were no chances of more rains. “Weather will now get hot in the city and the temperature may gradually reach 36 degrees Celsius by the end of Ramazan in March,” he added.

According to the Met department’s data, the maximum rainfall was recorded at the Jinnah Terminal 21mm followed by old airport area 12mm, Nazimabad (Paposh Nagar) 8.5mm, Saadi town 7mm, Met Complex University Road 5.8mm, Orangi Town 5.4mm, North Karachi 2.3mm, Bahria Town 2mm and Surjani Town 1mm. “Trace” precipitation was recorded at the PAF Faisal Base.

The overall weather turned pleasant after the brief spell of rain.

The minimum and maximum temperature recorded was 19 degrees Celsius and 27.1 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels were 86 per cent and 71 per cent in the evening and morning, respectively.

According to the forecast, sunny weather will prevail over the next two days (Wednesday-Thursday). The maximum temperature is likely to range from 29 to 31 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall was also recorded in Thatta 22mm, Rohri 9mm, Khairpur 6mm, Larkana, Sukkur and Jacobabad 2mm each and Mohenjo Daro 1mm.
