RAWALPINDI: A labourer died after being buried while digging a hillock and another was rescued on Tuesday.

According to Rescue 1122, two labourers were digging a hillock near Adiala Road when a mound of soil fell on them. Both the trapped labourers were pulled out by the rescue workers. However, one of them was pronounced dead, while the other was shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital, where he was stated to be in stable condition.

The deceased labourer was identified as Ahsan Iqbal, 45, and the survivor as Saeed Hussain, 45.

Meanwhile, police have booked 20 people and arrested eight of them on the charges of violating Section 144 and resisting the anti-encroachment staff of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation.

An official of the corporation lodged an FIR with the police, saying that they were conducting an anti-encroachment campaign along Nullah Leh when a large number of truck and mini-truck drivers and owners, carrying batons and iron rods, gathered there and resisted the staff.

He said the police were called, who rounded up eight of them, while the others managed to escape. It also came to light that an unknown person had established a parking lot on his own and was collecting parking fees.
