KARACHI: The outgoing vice chancellor of the drug and indecent videos scam-hit Islamia University, Bahawalpur, reportedly attempted to flee the country but was stopped by the Federal Investigation Agency, it was learnt on Thursday.

An official of the FIA who wished not to be named told Dawn the VC, Dr Athar Qazi Mahboob ul Haq, was stopped from leaving the country at the Jinnah International Airport two days ago. The officer said that Dr Athar was offloaded under the rule that “a serving government servant is supposed to obtain a no-objection certificate (NoC) from the competent authority before leaving the country”.

The official said that since Prof Athar did not have the NoC, he was offloaded and asked to obtain the same.

The VC is reported to have relinquished the charge on July 25. Prof Dr Naveed Akhtar, a pro-VC of the university, is currently handling the affairs the VC office.
