BAHAWALPUR: A rickshaw driver was killed while five schoolchildren suffered injuries, two of them critically, in a rickshaw-trailer collision near Tahirwali on National Highways, about 70kms from here, on Thursday.

According to police, rickshaw driver Hazoor Bakhsh was on his way to drop five school students when a speeding trailer hit it near Tahirwali. Hazoor Baksh died on the spot while the five boys suffered injuries. Two of them were shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital. Tahirwali police claimed to have arrested the trailer driver.

DOG-BITE CASES: Two people, including a minor child, were injured in as many dig-bite incidents in the district on Thursday.

In the first incident, Muhammad Hassan (3) was playing outside his house in the street at Sutlej Colony near Small Industries Estate, Bahawalpur. A stray dog appeared in the street and abruptly attacked the child, inflicting injuries on his ear. After first aid, the rescuers shifted him to the BVH emergency ward.

In the second incident which took place at village Nala Khan near Karachi Mor, Allah Ditta (50) was seriously injured when he was attacked by a dog.

The rescuers said two dogs were fighting with each other when Allah Ditta attempted to stop them and one of the dogs attacked him, causing him injuries to his leg. He was being treated at BVH.

SUSPENDED: Taking notice of the alleged murder of five people in the limits of Jalla Arian police in Lodhran district last month, the Punjab IG has suspended Dunyapur circle DSP Hakim Ali for his alleged negligence and dereliction of duty.

It merits mentioning that Station House Officer Ghulam Mustafa had already been placed under suspension by higher police officials. Five people were shot dead during a clash over land dispute between two rival groups last month.
